If you’ve spent any time on this site then you know I’m a huge fan of self care, so making a DIY self care ideas jar was a must for me!

This project is super quick and easy to recreate yourself!

Just use any upcycled jar you have on hand, plus my free printable jar label and self care idea cards!

I added a few extra details to my jar, but feel free to customize yours however you want to make it your own!

And since you use an upcycled jar to make it, you could probably make the entire thing for free if you already have some paint on hand!

    Supplies Needed:

Supplies needed for DIY self care ideas jar
    • Any jar (I used an upcycled Ragu sauce jar)
    • Free printable jar label and self care idea cards
    • White paint
    • All-purpose glue -not pictured-
    • Knob (optional)
    • E6000 or hot glue (optional)
    • Hearts (vase filler) (optional)

    Step 1: Painting

First you’ll want to clean the jar you plan on using.

I used a Ragu pizza sauce jar, but there are all kinds of different food or candle jars that would also work well for this!

You’ll want to make sure that you remove any sticker residue from your jar.

Once your jar is clean and dry you can remove the lid and paint it!

I used Rust-oleum Ultra Cover spray paint in Blossom White for mine.

If you’re using spray paint as well make sure to take your lid outside to a well ventilated area, and put down some newspaper or cardboard underneath it before you paint.

A few thin coats is always the best way to use spray paint!

Just be sure to allow enough time to dry between each coat.

You can also use a clear sealer over it once you’re finished if you want some extra protection, but you don’t have to!

    Step 2: Filling the jar

Next, if you haven’t already you’ll want to download and print out the free jar label and self care idea cards!

You can download them by signing up for my email list using the form below:

The label and self car idea cards will be emailed to you immediately after you confirm your email!

Once you’ve downloaded them, just print them out and and cut out the jar label and each individual self care card.

(you can always use a paper cutter to make this part a little easier!)

If you’re using the blank cards in your jar, now is the time to write in your own self care ideas!

(If you’re looking for a little help coming up with ideas you can check out this post: 11 Self Care Ideas for Anxiety)

Now as far as filling the jar goes, you can really make the cards look however you like!

Leave them flat, fold them, you can even try some crazy origami if you know how!

I left mine flat, but decided the jar needed a little extra something…

So I found this styrofoam heart banner that I had from Valentine’s Day, and used scissors to separate each of the hearts.

      Styrofoam hearts as jar filler

Then I just added them in with the cards until I liked the way it looked.

You can skip this step if you want to, or add whatever you like to your own jar!

Some other ideas for jar fillers could be, wooden shapes, confetti, charms, beads, small toys, etc.

      Step 3: Adding the details

Now you’ll want to glue the label you just printed and cut out onto the front of your jar.

Make sure it’s centered on the jar, and then use some all-purpose glue to glue it in place.

This is the one that I used:

      craft glue

(Be sure to spread a thin layer of glue over the entire thing so that it sticks evenly!
And remember that too much glue in one spot could cause the ink on the paper to bleed)

Then make sure the paint on your jar lid is dry, and glue your knob onto the center of the lid!

I ended up using a different knob then the one in my supplies photo up above.

I think this one really fits the style of the jar perfectly!

It’s actually one of the curio knobs from the Tim Holtz brand.

If you want to get the same one you can almost always find them at Hobby Lobby and other craft stores!

Or you can leave it off all together, it’s completely up to you!

And your DIY self care ideas jar is complete!

Step 4: Start adding more self care to your life!

      Here’s the big reveal!

      finished jar

I think the little hearts added such a cute touch to it!

I hope you’re absolutely inspired to make your own DIY self care ideas jar now!

My favorite thing about it is that there are so many ways you can use it!

You could pull a card every day for a daily self care practice, or maybe pick several to do on your “self care Sunday”.

Make one as a gift for someone in your life who you know could use to pamper themselves a bit more!

Another great idea would be to make them as party favors!

They would be perfect for a girls night, bridal shower, or bachelorette party!
