I’m so excited to be sharing 9 of my must-have home decorating tips with you!

Because let’s be honest, I think most of us feel a little lost when it comes to decorating, at least from time to time.

Whether it’s moving into a bigger home, moving into a smaller home, or even just realizing that you’ve outgrown your home’s current style, it can be hard to find the right solution for your home decorating challenges sometimes.

My hope is that these tips can help you figure out where to get started, or what to do next!

The perfect cure for any decorating slump…

But remember, these are just suggestions and ideas!

I believe the most important part of decorating your home is to stay true to your self!

So feel free to keep the tips that fit with you and your style, and leave the rest!

1. Start with a neutral base

Use neutral colored paint for your walls, such as white, beige, gray…etc.

Neutral colored walls give the greatest decorating flexibility by allowing you to add pops of color in accent pieces that can easily be switched out seasonally or whenever you want a change!

Ideally you should try to stick to just one or two accent colors.

Furniture is another place where it can be best to go with neutrals!

Although one or two brightly colored pieces can really add to your space, remember that too many can also end up making your home feel busy and overwhelming.

2. Use odd numbers

Remember to use the “rule of three” when decorating!

Arrange things like plants, candles, vases, or books in groups of threes.

Odd numbers are always more aesthetically pleasing!

Using three objects of varying heights is also a great way to add interest!

3. Mix textures

Using a variety of different textures is a great way to add visual interest to a space!

Some ideas include: wooden bowls, a faux fur throw, live or fake plants, patterned throw pillows, and pieces made from different types of metal.

Feel free to get as creative as you want with it!

4. DIY

I think DIY home decor used to have a bad rep as being tacky or cheap looking, but thankfully that seems to quickly be becoming a thing of the past!

Nowadays a quick pinterest search will show you thousands of ideas for budget friendly DIY projects that look incredibly high end!

Seriously, I have seen projects that look like they probably cost a fortune, but in reality were only a few dollars!

Search around, and you’re to find some DIYs that will look great in your home!

Plus your wallet will definitely thank you too!

There are also lots of great ways to DIY updates on your home’s fixtures, countertops, cabinets, doorknobs…etc.

A coat of white paint and new hardware can make your kitchen cabinets feel fresh again!

And some spray paint can easily update most light fixtures or doorknobs.

The possibilities are endless really!

5. Opt for larger pieces

must have home decorating tip: use larger pieces

This goes for both decor and furniture. If you have a small room you may be afraid to use something larger in the space, but more often than not a room will actually feel much larger with just one or two larger pieces, rather than several smaller ones.

It honestly took me forever to figure this out, but once I started decorating with this in mind, it was a complete game changer!

Larger decor can also sometimes carry a large price tag, but if you keep an eye out you can find some amazing pieces at a huge discount, either on clearance or during end of season sales.

Thrift shops and Craigslist can also be other great places to find larger pieces at an affordable price!

6. Don’t stick to one design style

use different decorating styles

Farmhouse? Scandanavian? Modern? Eclectic?

There are so many beautiful design styles out there to choose from, so don’t pick just one!

If you’re entire home only includes pieces from one style, it will likely feel staged and unnatural.

Use a variety of your favorites from different design styles to create a space that has character, and feels like home to you!

7. Less is more

9 must have decorating tips - less is more

If you’ve tried and tried, and yet a space still just doesn’t feel right…

Try removing something rather than adding something!

You can never go wrong with a little decluttering!

Watch out for too many pillows on couches or chairs, too many knick knacks or other decor on coffee and end tables, too many art pieces on the walls, and so on.

Less truly is more when it comes to decorating, and using a few thoughtfully placed accessories can usually create the biggest impact!

8. Use both old and new

use both old and new when decorating your home

One important way to curate a space that’s stylish but still has a unique character to it is to mix both new and vintage items into your decor.

Buying only brand new things, especially things that match, can make a space feel stiff and unimaginative.

And sometimes only using vintage items in every part of your decor can leave it feeling outdated and messy.

Balance is truly key here!

I’ve read articles where people mention an actual percentage for how much you should use of each type, but I think it depends on the style of your home as well as personal preference.

Remember to always design your space in a way that feels authentic.

Another great bonus to using vintage finds is that it’s a fun way to add something unexpected!

I love wooden tiered trays and cotton arrangements as much as the next girl, but a unique vintage find can be something that leaves an impression, and will have people thinking back to your space again and again!

9. Take your time

must have home decorating tip

Rome wasnt built in a day, and your house can’t be completely put together in one either!

The best decorated houses have usually been carefully crafted and curated for quite some time.

There’s a certain sense of knowing a space well, that can only come from time spent there.

If at first the perfect decor ideas don’t come to you, just relax and give it some more time!

And whatever you do, just remember that it doesn’t have to be perfect to be home sweet home!

I hope these 9 must-have home decorating tips help to jumpstart your decorating (or redecorating) journey!
