Who doesn’t love a good dollar store DIY? And this hot chocolate sign has to be one of my favorites that I’ve made lately!

I’ll get into a step by step tutorial on that in just a sec, but first let me tell you, one of the gifts that I was most excited about getting this Christmas was a wooden tiered tray!

I’ve wanted one like it for years, and I can’t wait to start decorating it for every season or holiday this year!

So to start with I wanted to do a fun “winter” themed tiered tray, and I knew it had to have a hot chocolate sign!

Hot chocolate is pretty much the pumpkin spice of winter after all, am I right? Haha!

This is probably one of the easiest dollar store DIYs that I’ve done yet, and it only cost me $2 to make!

So keep reading to find out exactly how you can make your own dollar store DIY hot chocolate sign for just $2 and in less than an hour!

Supplies needed:

supplies needed for dollar store tiered tray
  • Square wooden sign – $1 (Dollar Tree)
  • Chocolate phrase stickers – $1 (Dollar Tree)
  • White paint – (I used Rust-oleum Chalked spray paint (Linen White) that I already had on hand, but if you don’t have any paint on hand you can definitely use some of the white paint sold at Dollar Tree instead to keep the cost down!)
  • Clear sealer (optional)

Note: The sign I used was one I had bought awhile back so they may not carry that exact one anymore, but they always have a variety of small square signs that would be perfect! I actually got some very similar ones recently in the St Patrick’s Day section for a different project.

Step 1 – Painting

Start by painting your square sign white!

If you have a plain sign like I had you don’t have to do any prep work, however if you have one of the St. Patrick’s Day signs I mentioned above or another similar one, you may have to scrape and sand off any glitter on it before painting!

I did a few thin coats of Rust-oleum Chalked spray paint in Linen White on my sign.

Remember that when it comes to painting, several thin coats are always better than one thick one!

Thicker coats tend to drip and pool, and just look messy in general.

Be sure to allow your sign to dry before moving on to the next step!

Step 2 – Stickers

Once the sign is dry it’s time to get out the chocolate stickers from Dollar Tree!

Using these made it super easy since they already included the full word “chocolate”. I used the smaller sized one in the set.

To make the word “HOT” I just cut out the “H” and “O” together from the large “chocolate”, and then the “T” was also cut out of the same large “chocolate”.

Here’s a picture to show you exactly what I cut out:

After the letters are cut out, peel them up from the backing and place them all in the middle on your square sign, making sure that they are centered.

Push down on each letter, making sure that they are smooth and have no air bubbles trapped underneath.

Step 3 – Sealing (optional)

Now that your sign is done, you can either leave it as is or if you’d like you can seal it using a clear sealer to protect the stickers as well as the paint!

I used Rust-oleum matte clear sealer spray and just did a few thin coats over the entire thing.

Be sure to allow enough time for it to dry before handling!

And that’s all there is to it!

The finished product!

And here’s where it lives now, tucked into my winter themed tiered tray:

I love the small size and how versatile it is!

You can use it for your holiday decor, winter decor, and even your Valentine’s Day decor!

I looks super cute on a tiered tray, coffee bar, shelf, kitchen counter, etc.!

It would also look great at a hot chocolate bar for a party!
(You know once those are actually a thing again, haha)

Plus I still can’t get over the fact that it only cost me $2 and took less than an hour to make!

I absolutely love Dollar Tree’s selection of small wooden signs!
They are the PERFECT size for tiered trays, and you can customize them so many different ways!

If you haven’t already you should definitely check them out!

I just picked up a few more, and I’m going to be using them to create some DIY Valentine’s Day signs very soon!

So be sure to check back so you don’t miss them!
