These pastel pumpkins are probably my current favorite dollar store DIY!
I love that you can easily create two completely different looks with the same basic supplies!
And each of them took less than 15 minutes to create minus paint drying time.
This is simple enough that you could even have your kids get involved too, you just may have to do the gluing part for them if you use hot glue like I did.
My son and I have been trying to do alllll the fall things this year, so DIY pumpkins was an obvious choice!
I even bought an extra foam pumpkin so that he could have one all to himself, and he created a little green masterpiece of his own 😆
I’m always up for a DIY filled afternoon, especially with kiddos, their creativity never ceases to amaze me!
So keep reading to see how you can make both of these DIY pastel pumpkins using just a few things from the dollar store!
Supplies Needed: Succulent Pumpkin
- Foam pumpkin (Dollar Tree)
- 3 succulent picks (Dollar Tree)
- Craft paint – I used Apple Barrel in Sunkissed Peach (Walmart)
- Glue
Step One: Paint
To start of you’ll want to remove the green stem from the top of your foam pumpkin.
These are just stuck in with a pick so they are easy to remove!
Now take your paint (I used craft paint from Walmart which was only $1 per bottle, but Dollar Tree sells craft paint as well in different colors!) and give the entire pumpkin at least two coats.
This helps to make sure that bright orange color is completely covered up!
Allow your pumpkin to dry while you move on to the next step.
Step Two: Succlents
I liked these three colors of succulents best for this project but Dollar Tree has a wide variety of different styles and colors to pick from!
You’re going to want to take your three succulent picks and remove the stems.
Both the yellow and blue succulents I used have stems that pop right off.
The purple succulent has a long wire inside the plastic stem, so you’ll have to remove the outer plastic piece from the wire.
Using pliers may make this a little easier!
Just pull the stem out of the succulent completely (don’t worry, it will slide right back in!) and then grab the metal wire at the top of the stem.
Pull on the metal wire until the entire length pulls out of the plastic stem piece, and then reinsert the wire into the succulent.
If the metal stem doesn’t want to stay in place you may want to add a little glue to the top end of the metal stem before pushing it back onto it. I used hot glue for this.
Now you can leave it as is but I was worried that the wire might be too long and poke through the bottom of the foam pumpkin, so I used my pliers to break off a bit of the wire and make it a little shorter.
Your succulents are ready to be added to your pumpkin now!
Then just arrange them however you like on top of your pumpkin, and poke the stems into the top of it.
The foam makes it easy to do!
Now you can add some glue to the stem of each succulent (you may need to remove them and add the glue to the hole on top of your pumpkin before reinserting) and glue them into place.
I used hot glue for mine and just held them in place for a few moments until it hardened.
Finished!
And here’s what you’re cute little pumpkin looks like all finished!
If you want to you could also add some moss around the bottom of your succulents!
They usually always carry bags of moss at Dollar Tree as well, in a few different colors!
Mine will likely be displayed within reach of my three year old so I thought it better to leave it off and save myself from that mess, haha!
Supplies Needed: Pink Dotted Pumpkin
- Foam pumpkin (Dollar Tree)
- Jewel stickers (Dollar Tree)
- Craft paint – I used Apple Barrel in Cameo Pink (Walmart)
- Small piece of wood for stem
- Glue
Step One: Gems
First you’re going to take your jewels and stick them on your pumpkin in whatever pattern you like!
I just followed the seam along the top to create a circle, then did a few jewels going down the sides in different lengths.
Here’s how it looked when I was finished:
When I made mine I was actually planning on leaving the jewels unpainted at first, but once I saw them on I decided that I wanted a more subtle look.
So that’s why my pumpkin was already painted.
If you prefer this look then you can definitely paint your pumpkin first and leave the jewels unpainted!
I think it looks cute this way too!
Step Two: Paint & Stem
Now if you haven’t already you’ll want to remove the green foam stem that came on your pumpkin.
Take your paint (again I used craft paint from Walmart which was only $1 per bottle, but Dollar Tree sells craft paint as well in different colors!) and give the entire pumpkin at least two coats.
Allow it to dry, then take your wood and hot glue it on top of your pumpkin to create a new stem!
Hold it in place for a few moments until the hot glue hardens…
Finished!
Here it is in all it’s pastel glory!
What I love about these is that you can use any color of paint you want, to match your decor!
These would also look amazing painted white, faux concrete, or even painted to look like real pumpkins!
