These two cute Valentine’s day signs were such a fun and easy dollar store DIY to make!

The neat thing is that you can change these up using any color you like, to match your decor.

I love the minimalist looks of the black and white, but I think they would also look great in a pastel pink!

They’re a perfect way to add some Valentine’s Day vibes to your space!

Or for any time you just want to add a little love to your decor!

Supplies Needed:

supplies needed for DIY valentine's day signs
  • 2 square wooden signs (Dollar Tree)
  • Pack of wood hearts (Dollar Tree)
  • Letter stickers (Dollar Tree)
  • White paint
  • Black paint
  • Glue
  • Clear matte sealing spray (optional)

I used black Waverly chalk paint and white Waverly chalk paint that I already had on hand, and e6000 glue that I already had as well but you can find black paint, white paint, and various kinds of glue at Dollar Tree that would work too!

You can usually find a variety of different small wooden signs at Dollar Tree throughout the year.

When I went recently I found these wood St. Patrick’s Day signs which were the perfect size!

Step 1: Painting the signs

First off you’ll want to paint both of your small wooden signs white!

If you have signs that have glitter on them like mine did, you may have to do some prep work first.

Just be sure to scrape and/or sand the front of both of the signs to remove the glitter before painting.

Mine actually had a layer of paper over the front which had the glitter on it so I peeled most of that off and then used a scraper to get the last few stubborn bits.

You want the surface to be as smooth as possible, but don’t worry if there are a few imperfections, as the paint will help to hid these in the end!

Here’s what my signs looked like after I removed the paper with the glitter and then scraped them:

And then after a couple coats of white paint:

See how well it hides any minor imperfections?!

You gotta love chalk paint, haha!

Step 2: Painting the details

Next you’ll want to paint the details that you’ll be adding to your signs.

Take one of the wooden hearts and give it one or two coats of black paint (or whatever color you’ve chosen)

On these hearts one side is blank and one side has the word “love” lightly engraved. I painted the blank side on my heart.

(Note: The wooden hearts from dollar tree do have a small hole towards the top meant for hanging, so before painting I actually took some white silicone and filled in the hole. You can get silicone from Dollar Tree, but you can also use wood filler, or just try using a little extra paint to fill the hole as well!)

Give the heart some time to dry while you move on to the next step…

Painting the letters!

Now let me just say, Dollar Tree does actually carry these same letters in black, and if you can find those then you will save yourself this extra step!

When I went they were unfortunately completely out of black and only had blue and green available, so I had to do a little extra work.

But it’s definitely worth it after seeing how great the final product turned out!

If you have to paint your letter stickers like I did, just take a small paint brush and give them one or two very light coats.

I forgot to take a picture of the sticker sheet before I removed the letters but here’s a shot of it after I removed them to give you an idea of how it looked when I painted them:

Step 3: Adding the details

So once you make sure your signs, heart, and letters are all dry, you can start adding the details onto your signs!

I used some e6000 to glue the painted wood heart onto the center of the first sign.

E6000 has a very strong hold, but you can also use hot glue, wood glue, or pretty much whatever other glue you have on hand or can find at Dollar Tree!

It may help to place something heavy on the heart while the glue dries!

The second sign will take a little bit longer to make, but I was actually really surprised at how easy it was to get the phrase arranged exactly where I wanted it!

Start by gently peeling up the first letter sticker (I found it was easier to start with the word “you” since it will be in the center of the sign) and carefully lay it on the sign where you think you’ll want it, WITHOUT pushing it down onto the sign yet.

Repeat the process until all of your letter stickers are on the sign.

Now you can start to make any needed adjustments!

You can place them like I did in the center of the sign, or you can arrange them completely different!
It’s up to you!

The letters can be straight and even, or make them a little crooked if you like that look better!

Once you have them lined up however you want them, carefully push the letters down one at a time for a few seconds each.

(If you painted your letters be careful not to scratch any of the paint off with your nails!)

Step 4: Sealing (optional)

I usually seal my signs just to be on the safe side, as this makes them a little less likely to get scratched or scuffed.

But this step is completely optional!

If you do want to seal your signs, just spray them with a few coats of a spray sealer.

Be sure to use a matte sealer if you used chalk paint or another matte finish paint on the signs!

I used Rust-oleum’s matte clear sealing spray on mine.

And now your dollar store DIY Valentine’s Day signs are complete!

Check out the lovely end result:
